CDS DocBoX is a multi-screen web app that showcases audiovisual content produced at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
Drawing from the metaphor of an analog television, users tune in to randomized digital video by rotating their smartphone on a flat surface. By transmitting the smartphone’s motion sensor data to a tethered desktop browser in real-time, gestural metaphors transform the user’s phone into an analog knob or dial.
The platform intends to breathe a sense of urgency and presence into archival material by creating ephemeral, chance encounters between users and media.
